For Every Student

For every student who is tired of acting dumb

There is a teacher who is burdened with the constant
expectation of knowing everything.

For every student who is denied his right to object,

There is a teacher who is deprived his right to be wrong.

For every student who is forced to accept an idea

Which he knows is wrong,

There is a teacher who failed to preach what’s right.

For every student who is expected to agree in silence,

There is a teacher who doubts inside.

For every student who worships a book,

There is a teacher who has stopped learning.

For every student who is afraid to recite,

There is a teacher who is frightened to talk.

For every student who has not been taught the art of thinking

There is a teacher who has not progressed in teaching.

For every student who feels tied down by his schooling

There is a teacher who is weighed down by his work.

For every student who declines to study,

There is a teacher who weeps.

For every student who fails,

There is a teacher who bleeds.

For every student who takes a bolder step towards his own education,

There is a teacher who finds that teaching has become a lot easier.

*In writing this poem, I was inspired by Nancy Smith’s “For Every Woman.”
